Headquarters of the Paris City Hall since the fourteenth century, the present building was rebuilt by Th Ballu after the fire of 1871 by resuming the Renaissance facade. The interior decoration is very rich. But if there was a town hall there was not always a mayor. The Republic found Parisians too "frondeurs." It was not until 1977 that the use was restored and was elected to the current President of the Republic, Jacques Chirac.
