The Arab World Institute is a cultural institute in Paris dedicated to the Arab world. It is located in the heart of historical Paris, in the 5th arrondissement, between the Quai Saint-Bernard and the Jussieu campus.
The building was designed by a group of architects (Jean Nouvel and Architecture-Studio) who attempted a synthesis between Arab culture and Western culture.
The construction of this building, although included in the policy of major works commissioned by François Mitterrand, was decided under the seven-Valéry Giscard d'Estaing in 1973 to improve diplomatic relations between France and the Arab countries. The north façade is facing towards the historical Paris, it symbolizes the relationship to the ancient city, so this allusion to the façade.
The south facade incorporates the historical themes of geometry, since Arabic is composed of 240 moucharabies.
